Hotel 46- Boat Tour of NYC Harbor
Lisa and I took a boat tour of the Harbor to see Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. They no longer offer tours of the inside of the Statue of Liberty. You can still visit Liberty Island, but those tickets sell out months in advance.
Construction of the innovative Manhattan Bridge began in 1901 and was completed in 1909 at an initial cost of $22 million. The suspension bridge is one of four toll free bridges connecting Manhattan Island to Long Island. The total length of the bridge is 6,855ft with a height of 336ft.
New York City Hall in Manhattan is the oldest city hall building in the US that still houses its original government functions. Construction started in 1803 and was completed in 1812.
Ellis Island is a 27.5 acre federally owned island in New York Harbor. From 1892 to 1954, nearly 12 million immigrants arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey were processed there under federal law. Today, it is accessible to the public only by ferry and guided tours.
The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The copper statue was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States. The first model of the concept was made in 1870. It was designed and built in France but would be assembled on site following transport. 200,000 pounds of copper were used in the construction of the statue. In 1885, a French ship arrived in the New York Harbor with crates holding the disassembled statue on board. The dedication ceremony in 1886 was presided over by president Grover Cleveland. The occasion began the NY tradition of ticker-tape parades. After its dedication, the statue became an icon of freedom and was seen as a symbol of welcome greeting immigrants arriving by sea. By 1906, Lady Liberty had obtained her famous green patina due to the oxidation of the copper.
