Oneida Casino Green Bay, Wisconsin
We traveled to Door County, Wisconsin, on recommendations of many friends. Door County is widely known for its fruits and U-pick farms. They grow fruits and berries of all kinds for early picking. Apples and cherries are plentiful in the fall. Unfortunately for us, there were no berries in season. We did pass a farm with a large U-pick sign out, so we stopped out of curiosity. The farmer had approximately 10 acres planted with asparagus, peas, beans and corn. He had a cash box on the honor system at the site with a sign that stated all proceeds would go to American Cancer Society. It is always heart warming to see people that pay it forward. Unfortunately for us, the rows had been picked clean.
One cannot go to Green Bay without stopping and seeing Lambeau Field, the home field of the Green Bay Packers of the National Football
League (NFL). It opened in 1957 as City Stadium, replacing the original City Stadium at Green Bay East
High School as the Packers' home field. Informally
known as New City Stadium for its first eight seasons, it was
renamed in August 1965 in memory of Packers founder, player, and long-time head
coach, Curly Lambeau, who had died two months earlier. Lambeau Field is the oldest continually operating NFL stadium. In 2007, the Packers completed their 51st season at Lambeau, breaking the
all-time NFL record set by the Chicago
Bears at Wrigley
Field (1921–70). While Soldier
Field in Chicago is older, the Bears did not play their home games there
until 1971 and the team did not play there during stadium
renovations in 2002.
An old grain storage elevator in Algorem, Wisconsin is a common site.
A farm with all 3 of the common Silo's that are seen in Door County. The one in the foreground is an early 1900 silo. The two in the background are newer with the one on the left the newest style seen. It is a Harvestore that ranges in price from $125K to $250K from what we found on Goggle.
This is Canal Station Lighthouse on East side of the Sturgeon bay.
Sturgeon Bay Ship Channel Pier Head
Sturgeon Bay Channel Lighthouse is an active lighthouse on US Coast Guard property. The entrance road to the lighthouse was very odd, as it was 2.5 lanes wide. One full lane is designated for the Coast Guard base employees and one is a private driveway for the residence that bordered the base. The area in the middle of the driveway was set aside for use by visitors to walk down to view the water and see the jetty for the Lighthouse.
These are a few examples of various architecture of churches in the area. Green Bay is a very ethnic area and the architecture of the churches reflects this.
The local government contributed to the interesting architecture. This is the local county Clerks office.
This dam is on the Fox River before it enters the mouth of Green Bay and then dumps into Lake Michigan. This dam is literally in downtown. We walked and biked along the various trails that followed the path of the river and through town. The Riverwalk trails were super nice and went for miles. Many of the city and state parks have fees for use with pay kiosks along the various trails and entry points. They rely on the honor system to pay for use. We have been a little surprised at how many fees were have incurred just to walk around and ride our bikes in the parks.
